Michele Albano Stuart, aka The Pie Lady, learned to make pies from her Italian grandmother. She first sold her versions of grandma’s pies at a farmers’ market in Vermont. By the end of the first summer, it was clear that Stuart’s pies were a hit.

Stuart’s rotation of pies has grown to more than 80 recipes, which can be found in her cookbook, Perfect Pies. She’s gone from baking in her condo kitchen in Vermont to owning two Connecticut bakeries—in Norwalk and Westport. And the quality of her pies have landed her spots on Good Morning America and the Food Network. Here she is making her famous Apple Crumb Pie on Better:
