Like a spectacular sugar-filled current, waves of icing swell and crash on rustic home-style cakes for deliciously messy look that even perfectionists can get on board with. Even better, since texture and movement are the names of the game, this cake design is easily one of the simplest Pinterest-worthy frosting jobs to recreate.

Cake Artist Laura Grizzel from The Frosted Affair, a premiere wedding and events bakery in Nashville, TN, invited us to their studio to show us just how it’s done.

Pin the following step-by-step images in one helpful pin.

How to Frost a Home-Style Rustic Cake

Tools needed:

  • A chilled, crumb-coated cake
  • 2 Large pastry bags
  • Favorite buttercream frosting, creamy and at room temperature
  • Rotating cake stand
  • Angled spatula
  • Bench scraper
  • Star decorating tip

1. Place chilled, crumb-coated cake in the center of your rotating cake stand.

2. Fill one pastry bag with icing and cut a quarter-inch hole. Pipe frosting on top of cake. Smooth outward using angled spatula.

3. Pipe vertical stripes every inch around the cake.

Starting with one stripe, drag the bench scraper along the side of the cake while rotating the stand. This will create a uniform layer.

4. Starting with the cake’s sides, use the angled spatula to create waves in the frosting. Don’t worry about making things perfect—be your own artist!

5. Work your way around the cake, scraping off any excess frosting.

6. Recreate the same waves on the cake’s top.

7. Use the angled spatula to clean up and remove excess frosting around the cake’s base.

8. Fit your second pastry bag with a star tip. At the bottom of the cake, hold your bag at a 45-degree angle and pipe a boarder applying constant, steady pressure. We recommend giving the boarder a test-run on your counter before touching your cake.

9. Add a flower to your cake’s top for an extra-special presentation.
