Delicate White Cake

2/3cup shortening
2cups sugar
1teaspoon vanilla
3cups sifted cake flour
1/4teaspoon salt
2teaspoons baking powder
1cup water
4-- egg whites, stiffly beaten
2-- egg whites
1 1/2cups sugar
1 1/2`teaspoons light corn syrup (Karo)
1/3cup cold water
1dash salt
1teaspoon vanilla


Cake – Thoroughly cream shortening and sugar; add vanilla; add flour sifted with dry ingredients, alternating with water, beating after each addition. Fold in egg whites, beaten with remaining t baking powder. Bake in 2 9-inch layer pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. (Cake flour can be substituted with 1 1/2 c cake flour and 1 1/2 c all purpose flour.)

Frosting – Place all ingredients, except vanilla, in pan and mix thoroughly. (The secret to successful frosting ((if all ingredients are cold, place cold water in bottom of double boiler, also, start beating immediately after applying heat)) use same method if ingredients are room temperature.) Beat 7 minutes and remove from heat, add vanilla and beat until spreading consistency.
