  • Salt, to taste
  • Pepper, to taste
  • 1 (15-ounce) can chickpeas, rinsed and drained
  • 1 1/2 cups vegetable broth, or water
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 cup tahini
  • 3 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice, from 1 lemon
  • 2 teaspoons honey, or maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons cold water, as needed
  • Fresh parsley, cilantro, sesame seeds, olive oil, for garnish
  • Pita bread, or chips, for serving
