Walnut Scones

2 cups sifted all purpose flour
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup shortening
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 -- egg
1/2 cup milk


  1. Resift flour with sugar, baking powder and salt.  Cut in shortening.  Add walnuts. 

  2. Beat egg lightly with milk; stir into dry mixture to make a stiff dough.  Turn out onto lightly floured board and pat into large diamond, about ½ inch thick. 

  3. Cut into 9 smaller diamonds.  Sprinkle tops with additional sugar, if desired. 

  4. Bake on lightly greased baking sheet at 425F for about 12 minutes.  Serve hot.
