Spicy Meatball Casserole

  • Yield 8 to 10 servings

This is a great spicy spaghetti dish to serve to company.


1 1/2 pounds ground beef
3/4 cup soft bread crumbs
3 tablespoons milk
1 -- egg
1/4 cup minced onion
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
-- Pepper
1/4 teaspoon thyme
1/4 teaspoon oregano
1 -- garlic clove, crushed
1/4 cup margarine
3/4 cup onion, chopped
1 -- (16-ounce) can tomatoes
1 -- (6-ounce) can tomato paste
1 -- garlic clove, crushed
1 tablespoon parsley flakes
1 teaspoon oregano
pinch basil
pinch thyme
1/4 cup cooked crumbled bacon
1/2 pound spaghetti
1 cup small curd cottage cheese
1/2 cup sour cream
-- Parmesan cheese


  1. Combine beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, minced onion, salt, pepper, thyme, oregano, and 1 clove garlic.  Shape into balls and cook in margarine.  Drain.  In same skillet saute onion.  Stir in tomatoes, tomato paste, 1 clove garlic, parsley flakes, oregano, basil, and thyme.  Add bacon and meatballs.  Simmer covered for 45 minutes. 
  2. Meanwhile, cook and drain spaghetti.
  3. Preheat oven to 350F.  Grease 3-quart casserole.  Place one-half of cooked spaghetti in bottom.  Spread with cottage cheese, sour cream and one half of meatball mixture.  Add remaining spaghetti and top with meatball mixture.  Top with Parmesan cheese if desired.  Bake in 350F oven for 30 minutes.
