Tart citrus juice, orange liqueur, and a potent spirit--sound familiar? Consider this the French granddaddy of the Margarita.

4 to 5 ice cubes
1 1/2fluid ounces Cognac
3/4fluid ounce fresh lemon juice
3/4fluid ounce triple sec
Lemon twist, optional

  1. Place ice and all liquid ingredients in a cocktail shaker; shake vigorously. Strain into a chilled martini glass; twist lemon peel over drink and drop it in.
