Old-fashioned Oatmeal Cookies

1cup raisins
1cup water
3/4cup shortening
1 1/2cups sugar
2large eggs
1teaspoon vanilla
2 1/2cups flour
1teaspoon baking soda
1teaspoon salt
1teaspoon cinnamon
1/2teaspoon baking powder
1/2teaspoon cloves
2cups oatmeal
1/2cup chopped nuts


  1. Preheat oven 400F. Simmer raisins and water over medium heat unil raisins are plump,  about 15 minutes. Drain raisins, reserving the liquid. Add enough water to reserved liquid to measure 1/2 cup.
  2. Mix  shortening, sugar, eggs and vanilla until thoroughly blended. Stir in reserved liquid. Blend in remaining ingredients.
  3. Drop dough by rounded taspoonfuls about 2″ apart onto ungreased baking sheet and bake 8-10 minutes. Makes about 6 1/2dozen.
