Nutmeg Squares

1cup sugar
1/2cup shortening
1-- egg, beaten
1 1/4cups flour
1/2teaspoon salt
1/2teaspoon baking powder
1 1/4teaspoons nutmeg
1/2cup buttermilk
1/2teaspoon baking soda dissolved in 1 tablespoon hot water
1teaspoon vanilla
1 to 2tablespoon sugar
3/4cup raisins (about)


  1. Cream sugar and shortening.  Beat in egg.  Add flour, salt, baking powder and nutmeg.  Stir in buttermilk, dissolved baking soda and vanilla.   Spread in buttered 8 1/2×13 1/2-inch pan.  Sprinkle liberally with sugar and raisins.  Bake 20 minutes at 400F until golden brown.  Do not overbake.  Cut into bars.
