Mocha-Devil’s Food Cake

  • Yield 16 servings

Very rich, very good!


1/4 pound butter or margarine
2 cups sugar
2 eggs, separated
2 cups all-purpose, sifted flour
1 1/2 cups milk
1/4 pound (4-squares) unsweetened chocolate, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 pound butter or margarine
1 (16-ounce) box powdered sugar
1 teaspoon cocoa or 1 square unsweetened chocolate, melted
Cold liquid coffee


  1. To prepare the cake:  Cream butter and sugar.  Beat in egg yolks.  Mix flour and milk into into batter alternately.  Add melted chocolate and vanilla extract.  Sift in baking powder and fold in.  Add stiffly beaten egg whites and fold in.  Bake in two 9-inch prepared layer pans at 375F for about 25 minutes.
  2. To prepare the icing:  Cream butter and sugar.  Add chocolate.  Use enough cold coffee to make spreading consistency.
