Great Grandmother’s Gingerbread

  • Yield: 12 servings

"This gingerbread recipe was handed down from my Great Grandma and is over 150 years old. It is so moist and everyone who has tasted it loves it."

Ingredients

1/4cup butter
1/4cup lard or butter
1/2cup sugar
1 egg, beaten
1cup molasses
1 1/2teaspoons baking soda
1/2teaspoon salt
1teaspoon ground cinnamon
1teaspoon ground ginger
1/2teaspoon ground cloves
2 1/2cups sifted all-purpose flour
1cup hot water

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 13 x 9-inch baking dish. Cream the butter, lard, and sugar together. Add the beaten egg and molasses. Mix the baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and flour together in a separate bowl. Stir the flour mixture into the creamed mixture. Add the hot water last. Beat the batter until smooth. Pour into the prepared baking dish. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes.

Tips From Our Test Kitchen:
Serve this classic cake warm with real whipped cream. It’s also delicious topped with a lemon sauce.
