Ingredients 1/4 cup butter1/4 cup lard or butter1/2 cup sugar1 egg, beaten1 cup molasses1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda1/2 teaspoon salt1 teaspoon ground cinnamon1 teaspoon ground ginger1/2 teaspoon ground cloves2 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour1 cup hot water Instructions Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 13 x 9-inch baking dish. Cream the butter, lard, and sugar together. Add the beaten egg and molasses. Mix the baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and flour together in a separate bowl. Stir the flour mixture into the creamed mixture. Add the hot water last. Beat the batter until smooth. Pour into the prepared baking dish. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes. Tips From Our Test Kitchen: Serve this classic cake warm with real whipped cream. It’s also delicious topped with a lemon sauce.
