German Chocolate Pie from Hampton Roads, Va.

  • Yield 8 servings

Coconut gives this chocolate pie lots of texture and flavor.


1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon flour
2 tablespoons cocoa
pinch salt
2 -- eggs
3 tablespoons butter, melted
2/3 cup milk
3/4 cup shredded coconut
1/2 cup pecans, chopped
1 teaspoon vanilla
-- 9-inch pastry shell, unbaked


  1. Preheat oven to 400F.  Combine sugar, cornstarch, flour, cocoa and salt.  Add eggs, butter and milk; then coconut, nuts and vanilla.  Pour into pastry shell and bake for 35 to 40 minutes.  Top will be crusty and firm.
