1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter
1 1/3 cups evaporated milk
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 tablespoons cornstarch
1/8 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 -- unbaked (9- or 10-inch) pie shell
1 1/3 cups flaked coconut
1/2 cup pecans, chopped

  1. Melt the chocolate and butter in a saucepan over low heat.  Stir in the evaporated milk gradually.  Remove from the heat.  Mix the sugar, cornstarch and salt in a large bowl.  Mix the eggs and vanilla in a bowl.  Stir into the sugar mixture.  Stir in the chocolate mixture gradually.  Pour into the pie shell.  Mix the coconut and pecans in a bowl.  Sprinkle over the filling.  Bake at 375F for 45 to 50 minutes.  Do not overbake; the filling should still be soft in the center.  Remove to a wire rack to cool.  Serve with whipped cream or ice cream.
