Double Decker Date Bars

  • Yield 32 pieces

Two layers of tasty goodness in these snack bars.


Bottom Layer:
1 1/4 cups sifted flour
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter
Top Layer:
1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
1/3 cup granulated sugar
2 -- eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 tablespoon flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
1 -- (8-ounce) package chopped pitted dates
-- Powdered sugar


  1. To prepare the bottom layer.  Combine flour, sugar and butter.  Blend to fine crumbs.  Pack or press into 9-inch square baking pan.  Bake at 350F for 20 minutes until light brown.
  2. To prepare top layer.  Combine first four ingredients and beat well.  Add flour, baking powder, salt and nutmeg; beat well.  Stir in dates and nuts.  Spread over baked pastry.  Bake at 350F for 25 minutes.  Cool and sprinkle with powdered sugar.  Cut into 32 bars.
