Date and Buttermilk Muffins

1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup all purpose flour
2 tablespoons wheat germ
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/3 cup chopped dates
1/3 cup chopped walnuts
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
1 -- egg


  1. Heat oven to 400F. 
  2. In mixing bowl, stir flours, wheat germ, baking powder and soda, cinnamon and nutmeg until blended.  Stir in dates and walnuts. 
  3. Measure buttermilk and oil in the same 2-cup, add sugar and egg; whisk until thoroughly blended. 
  4. Pour liquid ingredients over dry.  Stir, bake and cool.
