Best Chocolate Cake

  • Yield 10 servings


2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 cup water
3/4 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup shortening
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
4 ounces melted, unsweetened chocolate (cooled)


  1. Heat oven to 350F. Grease and flour 2 (9-inch) round cake pans or a 9 x 13-inch baking pan.
  2. Measure all ingredients into large mixing bowl.  Blend 30 seconds on low speed, scraping constantly.  Beat 3 minutes at high speed, scraping bowl occasionally.
  3. Pour into pan.  Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until wooden tooth pick inserted in center comes out clean.
  4. Cool and frost with chocolate or mocha frosting.
