Banana-Caramel Pie

10 candy caramels
2cups milk
1/3cup flour
1/3cup sugar
1/4teaspoon salt
3 slightly beaten egg yolks
1teaspoon vanilla
2 bananas
1 baked pie shell
1cup heavy cream, whipped


  1. Melt caramels in milk over low heat.  Combine flour, sugar and salt in double boiler.  Add caramel-milk mixture and cook over water until thick, stirring constantly.  Add beaten egg yolks to which a little hot mixture has been added.  Cook 5 minutes longer, stirring.  Remove from heat.  Add vanilla, cover and chill.
  2. Arrange 2 sliced bananas on bakied pie shell.  Cover with filling.  Top with whipped cream.
