Angel Cookies

  • Yield 30 pieces

Low-fat and airy, these meringue cookies get added texture from chopped dates.


"This was my grandmother's recipe. It was a family favorite. My brother always asked Granny to make these cookies when we got together for holidays and birthdays."


4 egg whites
1 pinch salt
2 cups powdered sugar
1 cup chopped dates
1 cup chopped nuts


  1. Preheat oven to 300F.
  2. Beat egg whites with salt for 3 minutes. Add powdered sugar and beat 10 minutes. Fold in dates and nuts, and drop by tablespoons on greased and floured cookie sheet.
  3. Bake for 25 minutes. Watch-they burn easily.

Tips From Our Test Kitchen: Be sure to add the dates and nuts the last minute before baking or the cookies will become flat rather than fluffy. Sprinkle colored sugar on top, if desired.
