A head cold in winter seems a doubly cruel blow from old Mother Nature. It’s already bone-chilling outside—seems extra unfair to be saddled with a hacking cough, stuffy head and fever. But into each life, as they say, a little, er, discomfort must fall.

So what’s the best remedy for what ails you? As any doctor will tell you, there is no cure for a cold, but you can definitely treat the symptoms. An over-the-counter remedy with an expectorant (like Mucinex) will help alleviate congestion, sore throat, and coughing. For everything else, try the chicken soup cure.

Matzo Ball Soup

Even ancient civilizations as far back as twelfth-century Jewish philosopher and physician Maimonides have heralded chicken soup as a panacea for head colds. Modern-day science concurs: studies show that chicken soup with vegetables appear to act as an anti-inflammatory, in addition to giving your immune system it needs to fight a nasty bug. And frankly, there’s reason why people refer to matzo ball soup as “Jewish penicillin.” To get our Matzo Ball Soup recipe, click on the image.
