Sometimes the best cook-out is a cook-in—especially when summer temps start soaring. If you can't take the heat, back away from the grill and get back in the kitchen. Then plug in your energy-saving, low heat-emitting crock pot and cook almost everything you need for a holiday or weekend cook-out without ever breaking a sweat.

- Don't bake those beans—crock pot 'em. Mix up your favorite recipe—like our Boston Baked Beans—and cook on LOW for 8-12 hours or HIGH for 3-4 hours.
- For an easy potato side dish, combine 2 pounds of unpeeled, scrubbed fingerling or quartered red potatoes, 3 cloves minced garlic, a half stick of melted butter, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, the juice of three lemons, a few spikes of chopped fresh rosemary or thyme, salt, and pepper. Cook on LOW for 6-8 hous or HIGH for 3-4 hours.
- To make a yummy warm potato salad, whisk together a cup or so of chicken broth, 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar, a tablespoon of sugar, 2 tablespoons canola oil, and salt and pepper. Combine with 2 pounds of peeled Yukon Gold potatoes in a crock pot. Cook on LOW for 3-4 hours, or until potatoes are tender. When cooked, stir in 1/4 cup sour cream, finely chopped Vidalia onion and celery and season with salt and pepper. Just before serving, sprinkle with crumbled, crispy bacon.
