Last year the government revealed a nutrition prescription for our plates. With the healthy MyPlate model, it’s easy to picture a dinner plate with fruits and vegetables filling half, lean protein filling a quarter, and whole grains filling the rest. Low-fat milk fills the dairy beverage glass. It may be even simpler to visualize how MyPlate could fit into a bowl: Think soups and stews brimming with a cornucopia of vegetables, lean meats, whole grains like corn, and topped with grated cheese or a dollop of yogurt. This Tortilla Meatball Soup could just become not only “my” plate, but “your” plate, too.
