Homemade Holiday Gifts in a Pinch

Suddenly realized you forgot someone on your Christmas list? Don't panic—get busy.

There's always one: a teacher, neighor or co-worker you forgot to buy something for during your rounds of holiday shopping. It's never too late to make or bake something special though. Cookies, fudge and candies are easy enough to make and can be packaged in everything from embellished boxes to festive tins. When you're in a pinch for time but you want something thoughtful, try these ideas and recipes:

Chocolate Covered Goodies for Teacher

  • Make it: Melt white, milk or dark chocolate bark or morsels in the microwave on HIGH at 30-second intervals until melted. Dip sandwich cookies or pretzel sticks into the melted chocolate and sprinkle with sanding sugar or crushed candies, or drizzle over a mix of nuts and dried fruits placed in a cookie sheet lined with waxed paper. Allow to harden (break fruit and nut mixture into shard-like pieces).
  • Wrap it: Create a wrapping that will later serve as pencil holder. Use hot glue to attach three recycled cans to one another. Have kids adorn the structure with ribbons and puffy paint. Divide goodies, place in plastic bags, cellophane or glassine pouches. Place treats in cans along with number two pencils and other new school supplies.

Hot Coco for a Neighbor or Co-worker

  • Make it: Pack a pretty jar with a few home-baked cookies or our Hot Chocolate Chai Mix. Sprinkle a half inch layer of mini chocolate chips on top followed by a layer of miniature marshmallows.
  • Wrap it: Cut a circular piece of scrap fabric 7 inches in diameter. Place over the jar and secure to lid with ribbon.
