Low-fat, light, and airy—the aptly named Angel Food Cake is a surprisingly healthy favorite when it comes to dessert.

Cube it, dice it, layer it, drizzle it with chocolate or pile it high with chunks of fruit—is there anything you can’t do with angel food cake? This sweet, airy, delicate, “good for you” sponge cake serves as a base for decadent desserts. A great time saver, it’s readily available in grocery stores, for make-and-take desserts, or you can start from scratch with fresh (but simple) ingredients. Either way,  this low calorie, low fat and no-cholesterol treat is a nutritional bargain as well a treat. Here are two homemade versions we adore—one light and one dark.
